Clannad First Impressions

Over the past, I have watched many anime that I feel like are essential to watch. Some of those anime include K-On!, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Nichijou, Azumanga Daioh, Toradora!, Steins;Gate, Welcome to the NHK!, and Neon Genesis Evangelion. These are the kind of anime I must watch before I die or quit watching anime. The only anime left that belongs in that category is Clannad, which I heard is the saddest anime ever.

But before I start watching Clannad, I needed to watch Air and Kanon first. If I had watched Clannad before Air and Kanon, they would have felt lackluster. I thought Air was very great, and Kanon was excellent. Both anime had really sad and emotional moments, and while Air had good characters, Kanon had excellent characters. Now it finally comes to this moment, where I start watching Clannad.

The story begins when Tomoya meets a girl with brown hair named Nagisa. He is introduced to her family. Like Kanon, Clannad has a male sidekick comic relief character. Of course, there are some funny moments and some elements that make it saddening.

Unfortunately, I had already received some major Clannad spoilers, such as a few important characters dying, and some elements on how the Clannad universe works. I have seen a variation of the Clannad ED featuring Pikachu, and I remember it being the cutest thing ever.

I’d say that the art and animation of Clannad is about on the same level as Kanon. It looks more modernized than Kanon, yet at the same time, there is a noticeable animation gaff involving Nagisa’s father. Otherwise, this show looks great and feels less dated than Kanon. I wonder what kind of stuff will happen next? Hopefully it will be able to do some great things that make it distinct from Air and Kanon and just truly impress me.
